Characters running to school with toast hanging from their mouths, a bland, Gary Stu lead in a harem anime and long-winded transformation scenes. Love em or hate em, clichés are a big part of anime that will never go away…no matter how much we want some of them to.
We’re not here to talk about the bad today. Today we celebrate the clichés that never get old no matter how much they are used. At least one of them anyway. So, what is my favorite anime cliché of all time?
This one may seem a bit foreign to some of you, but just take a moment to think about it. Vash from Trigun, Spike from Cowboy Bebop and even Gintoki from Gintama. All of those guys share the same sort of characteristics. They’re appear lazy, easy-going and nonchalant 90% of the time they are on-screen. Nothing ever seems to faze them and rarely do they not have a goof ball grin on their lips. What they also possess, however, is the metaphorical switch that can be flipped whenever they feel like it. And when it’s flipped, that gigantic goof ball suddenly becomes a total bada**.
There is nothing cooler than watching that good-natured slacker you’ve been laughing at/with all episode suddenly go on the rampage and perform awesome feat after awesome feat. The only thing about Spike cooler than his personality were his fight scenes. Heck! The only reason we put up with Kenshin’s crap in Rurouni Kenshin was because we knew, at any moment, the Battosai would appear to beat down anyone foolish enough to challenge him.
So, what’s your favorite anime cliché? Let me know in the comments below. I’m NEETaku and that was Just…My 2 Cents!
