NEETaku’s 30 Day Anime Challenge Day 17: Favorite Character Transformation

TRANSFORMATIONS! TRANSFORMATIONS EVERYWHERE!!

If there’s on thing that anime loves, other than throwing cute girls into every situation possible, it’s transformations! Shone, shoujo, seinen. Almost every genre of anime has had its fair share of characters going through some hour-long sequence where they either change form, change clothes or gain some new-found ability they never had before. You can’t have a shonen battle anime/manga without ate least one transformation sequence. It’s like one of the commandments of anime! xD

Despite there being a ton of them strewn about the anime landscape, there’ only one (actually two, but the other one’s for later) that deserves to considered the best of the best IMO.

Gohan going SSJ 2

As iconic as Goku going Super Saiyan was, I’ve always felt like Gohan’s ascension to Super Saiyan 2 was done a lot better than it. As many of us know, Gohan always possessed this pool of untapped rage and power that was always sporadically let loose. It was never sustained over time and eventually ended up leaving him drained and vulnerable. He could never control it or tap into it when he wanted, so we always waited with bated breath to see when he’d go berserker mode again.

Then came the Cell Games and Gohan was put in the most dire situation he could possibly be in. There was no one who could save him. All his friends and family were on the verge of being killed and Cell was going to win. Then, after watching Android 16 get killed, he finally let’s loose that untapped pool of power and EXPLODES!!

This was a much more natural transformation compared to Goku’s. With the latter it felt like just a plot convenience. He had already used up all his energy and used his best attack. On top of that, we all know that Goku never held anything back in a fight and gave it his best shot 100% of the time. So, where exactly did he pull that extraordinary amount of energy from in order to go Super Saiyan to begin with? Logically, it didn’t make sense. With Gohan, however, it was the culmination of him realizing just how awesome he truly was! All that unbridled strength we had seen in short bursts before had finally become his own and we couldn’t wait to see what he was capable of!

  1. Also: it was much shorter than all the hour-long transformations. I was always like, “Seriously, we get it, we know what the changes are, we don’t need to see the full sequence every single time.” But the DBZ transformations? After the first time they show a transformation, every other time someone changes, you could blink and miss it. An economy of effort that is ironic considering how they stretched five minutes across ten episodes that one time, and they were rather famous for that sort of thing.
