No matter how much we love anime. No matter how much we enjoy marathoning season after season of a series, there’s always some re-occurring element that just grinds our gears. Whether it’s from some random person critiquing your hobby, or just some trope you’ve come across again and again that’s gotten rather old, we all have our various pet peeves. Obviously I’m no exception to this. Which is why I’m going to be listing my biggest ones today. Starting with:
#6 Anime is For Kids
Yeah, yeah…we’ve ALL heard this one before. It’s about as cliché an insult/comment as asking some tall person ” How’s the weather up there?”. Even in this day in age, when anime is way more mainstream than ever before, I still hearing people saying it from time to time. The most infuriating thing about this one is the fact that these same critics are fans of Disney moves, yet they can’t see that two of them are the same!! Both make animated features that are geared towards kids AND adult audiences. How can you praise one yet unfairly criticize the other!? Heck! Korra was technically made for kids, yet tons of adults enjoy the series. Get off your high horse, ya jerks!!
#5 Useless Filler Episodes
Yes, people, there is actually a difference. Filler by itself isn’t totally a bad thing. Like many other tools used to make an anime, it’s all about how you use it. The most common form of filler are one-off episodes that have ZERO baring on the overarching plot, and are simply there to make sure the anime doesn’t catch up to the currently running manga series. However, there are times where an episode may at first come across as useless filler, but actually help to move the plot along.
A good example of this would be the infamous belly dancing episode of Gargantia. Due to the gratuitous fanservice most people forget that a lot of exposition was actually being given to the audience. Of course, it’d be hard NOT to miss it when it’s put on the back burner for underage girls in skimpy outfits shaking their butts! Pick one or the other, Gargantia!!
#4 Plot Armor
I get it. The main character is basically supposed to be untouchable. They’re meant to be able to win at the end of the they day simply because that’s what the plot demands. However, much like with Tralfagar Law living through being shot like…50 times, plot armor can sometimes not make ANY sense at all. As with filler, there is a time and place for a hero Deus Ex Machinaing their way out of a dire situation. HOWEVER!!! If you set up rules within the anime and said MC usurps those rule simply because they are the MC, I’m going to call BS!!
Like say….Kirito not dying after being stabbed in the chest simply because he didn’t want to die You know…cause NOBODY else in that horrible, living nightmare didn’t want to die as much as he did.
#3 Cute Characters Doing Cute Things….Cause They’re Cute
I’m honestly surprised I haven’t done a full on rant about this already. May need to add that to the list I’m making for topics. Anyways, I’m not that big a fan of the moe concept, especially its more modern incarnation. I mean yeah, I did manage to sit through K-On and actually found enjoyment from it. But, there were also times where my anime diabeetus started acting up as a result of the over exposure cuteness in the series.
No, I’m not saying I don’t like cute girls. But, if all you’re giving me is a cute girl doing things cutely, I’m going to get bored reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaallllllllly fast! And don’t even get me started on the concept of putting cute girls in weird scenarios just because you can! Like driving tanks! Or playing ping-pong! Or riding motorcycles!!! Or…insert some random thing!! ENOUGH ALREADY!!!
#2 Reverse Sexism
A guy accidentally gropes a girl? He gets physically assaulted and called a pervert.
A girl accidentally walks in on guy changing? She just blushes and runs away without suffering any sort of consequences.
Look, I’m not advocating that anime makers should start a trend of making males go around pimp slapping girls. However…..this trope seriously needs to die! There is nothing funny about seeing a guy get clobbered by a chick because of a simple accident she perceived as him being a pervert. The only time I found it entertaining was in Working with Inami. And the only reason I did was because she had a legit, although incredibly bizarre, reason for hitting guys she sees.
#1 Stupid Shonen Heroes/Main Characters
I know I’ve ranted about this before, but it bears repeating! I am sooooooo sick and tired of dealing with shonen MCs that are about as bright as a dead light bulb. I know there are some that are very intelligent, but they are an incredibly small minority. What infuriates me the most is that, on certain occasions, their “evil” rival tends to have a waaay better back story than they do! Imagine if DBZ was a redemption story about Vegeta, or if YuGiOh was about Kaiba growing up to usurp his father and become the greatest duelist in the world! Those would make for some awesome anime series, people!!
I’m NEETaku and that was Just…My 2 Cents!!
