You know why I decided from the start not to do in-depth reviews on this blog? Well, besides the fact I’m way too lazy to do all of that research. It’s because I don’t want to come off sounding like one of the literal thousands of talking heads who think they are way smarter than they actually are. Not saying ALL anime reviewers are like that, but you know ones I’m referring to. The ones that like to flaunt the fact that they took 1-2 years of film in college and thus feel overly qualified to tell you how thing should work. Or how about the ones that think every anime that puts a little twist on the standard formula is somehow subverting the entire genre!!!
Somewhere in the past the word “deconstruction” was uttered by some reviewer in a review of an anime they watched. And ever since then that word has been tossed around more than the ball in a rugby match! Not saying the word itself makes someone a pedantic, pontificating, pretentious prick. But, like Ignio Montoya famously said, the meaning of the word has been lost to time. Suddenly every anime can be considered somewhat of a deconstruction if they tweak a few tropes here or there. Obviously, that this is a rant, I possess a differing opinion.
Madoka Magica is NOT a deconstruction of the magical girl sub-genre! It’s just a magical girl show with super dark themes!!
Gurren Lagaan is NOT a deconstruction of the mecha sub-genre! It’s a supper, friggin awesome anime that takes mecha anime tropes and turns the dial up to 11!!
And finally…and I can’t believe I have to say this…School Days is NOT a bloody deconstruction of the harem genre! It’s just a really…Really..REEAAALLYYY bad anime!
Look, what I’m trying to get at is, if you’re going to use a word, use it the right way! A BLT is still a sandwich despite it not having any sort of meat in it. Likewise, any anime that changes up the formula a little isn’t breaking down pre-established tropes that have been used forever. They are simply trying to differentiate themselves from others shows in the same genre. Plain and simple.
I’m NEETaku and that was Just…My 2 Cents!!
