NEETaku Discusses: Nothing Man Made Is Ever Perfect, or My Hero Academia’s Fatal Flaw

That’s right! I’ve finally done it, folks! I’ve finally figured out why, as much I enjoy the show, I can’t quite put My Hero Academia up into the up echelon of shonen anime series with the likes of DBZ, One Piece or Full Metal Alchemist. And when I think about it, I find it rather odd that I never noticed it until now.

The music is MHA….really isn’t all that good.

I’m not saying that the OST in MHA is bad per se. But….it’s just not that memorable in my opinion. A big thing with me when it comes to music in anime the opening & ending theme songs. The opening theme should be one that gets you amped up for the anime you’re about to watch. It doesn’t always have to be fast-paced, upbeat or bombastic. It just has to set the right mood. Likewise, the ending theme should be a song that brings you down from the highs you felt during the episode and help wrap things up in a nice, little bow. Unfortunately…none of MHA’s songs do that for me.

Every single one of the openings/endings that have been made for the show all sound super generic and by the numbers. Which is SUPER disappointing given all the effort put into the other aspects of the show. Even shows that I disliked, as noted in another post, have managed to give me some of my favorite songs of all time. It’s a shame that MHA hasn’t done the same.

Again, I’m not saying the music is bad. While I haven’t had a chance to go through the entire OST, I do remember a few of the background pieces being okay and fitting the mood of the episode. But nothing ever POPPED for me. It was just…appropriate. Like this was what you’d expect to hear during an emotional scene, or this is what you’d play during a battle.

Hopefully, when I do get the chance to listen to the OST, my opinion will change. Until then, MHA really needs to step up their game when it comes to its musical accompaniment. I’m NEETaku and that was Just…My 2 Cents!!!

  1. I will admit, I can remember huge chunks of music from Bleach and just thinking about a particular scene that I enjoyed I can usually hum along to the music, but MHA really doesn’t have that. I liked the OP in season one but season two and now three haven’t done much for me. I think you are right that the music in MHA serves its purpose but that’s about all. It isn’t an asset to the show and that is a shame given how a good soundtrack can really elevate a scene.
