NEETaku Rants: So…Is Ecchi Just Softcore Hentai Now?

You know, anime industry…I’ve really, really…REALLY…trying to give you the benefit of the doubt. No matter how much otaku pandering schlock you’ve forced onto us fans, I’ve always held out hope that one day…ONE DAY…you’d come to your senses and change your ways. And, as usual, whenever I think such a thing I am proven:

lex-luthor-wrong1

No matter how many times I think anime can’t sink any lower, it does. Companies aren’t just scraping the barrel anymore, folks. They have clawed straight through said barrel and are scraping up dirt!! First we got Kodomo no Jikan, a show so disgusting I dare not even look up images for it on account I’ll feel dirty afterwards. Then, we were “blessed” with the sight of two girls molesting a teddy bear in KissxSis:

THAT BEAR HAS A FAMILY, YOU SICKOS!!

THEN, they took things even further by having chicks basically being raped by tentacles almost every episode in Dragonar Academy:

BUT OOHHHH NO!! You weren’t satisfied with that were you, anime industry. No no no no no NO! You kept on listening to wanton cries of the otaku community. Constantly bowing to that inhuman concentration of filth that yearned for more and more until…until…Ugh…just watch….

I mean…I MEAN COME ON!! How the heck is this NOT considered hentai?! HOW?! Trust me when I say this the tame version of these scenes folks! There are scenes in Bikini Warriors wear a dog licks a chick underneath her bikini bottom, and a scene one chick gives another oral!! And what compounds all of this utter bullcrap is that Funimation has bought the license for this show and dubbed it!!! They actually brought this crap over to the States for all of us to view!!

I…I just…I…I. Just….

This picture says it all.

Where is the line, folks? That’s what I’m asking: Where is the line? When are these companies finally going to stop listening to these horndogs and realize they are bordering on making pornography in anime mainstream? Panty shots and giant boobs are one thing, but all out sex scenes is another story! I know that US and Japan differ on sexual content quite a bit, but even Japan has shown itself to have certain standards that they dare not compromise. So again I ask: Where Is The Line?!

If the otakus want hentai, then make hentai for them. I don’t care if shows like Bikini Warriors are in the minority right now. If they are allowed to, they will eventually become more frequent to the point where it becomes normal to see chicks being assaulted by tentacles in varying details. We, as fans of this media, need to step up and say “NO” to this crap!!

I’m NEETaku and this was Just…My 2 Cents. Now excuse me while I go take a bath in a tub full of bleach and Purel.

  1. I didn’t imagine anything super tasteful from a title like Bikini Warriors. I believe Bikini Warriors is rated 17+, but I agree it seems more like it belongs in the Hentai category than an “adult” anime option. Crunchyroll didn’t stream it (AFAIK), but it looks like you can indeed watch on Funimation.

It has something like 35K members on MyAnimeList, which is more than I thought it would get, but it’s low enough to be in the upper ranks of other Hentai in terms of popularity. I’m not sure if it should be a sign of this sort of content encroaching on mainstream anime, but I agree it’s an annoying trend.

  2. I personally don’t mind Ecchi.

Heck, I don’t even mind that it gets licensed for western distribution by companies like Funimation.

But I can only take it in small doses, and it seems the genre is becoming more and more present every year all the while becoming less and less restrained.

I don’t even mind sex scenes in Anime, but there needs to be a narrative context or purpose behind it other than for fan-service. Berserk for example.

Entertaining rant that I can most certainly relate to on some levels. I enjoyed reading this.

    • Glad you enjoyed it. Like you I can only tolerate ecchi/fanservice in small doses, but this sudden turn in audacious scenes gives me a bit of worry.

Also like you said, context is important ala Berserk. If there’s no point to it, then why do it?

  4. I thought Bikini Warriors was rather funny. The show’s title immediately tells you what to expect. If it isn’t your cup of tea no one if forcing you to watch it.

There is a market for this type of thing so just let those viewers enjoy the titillation whilst you enjoy something else. I don’t think there is a need to incite a revolution against ecchi stuff. How would romance fans like it if a group started to call for love stories to be banned? Tentacles assaulting girls is bad, but so are those mean tsunderes who keep smacking innocent anime protagonists.

    • I don’t watch ecchi shows at all. I know about Bikini Warriors because I subscribed to Funimation on YouTube. I’m not calling for a all out extinction of those types of shows, just don’t want them to become the norm.

  5. It’s one thing to show some partial nudity or more skin but there has to be a line on how far you go. I remember watching We Without Wings years ago. At first, it feels like a typical ecchi but there is a scene where the anime feels like a h-series for a brief moment. I was shocked to see that in an anime and it was from FUNimation.

  6. Entertaining post – thank you! As a female anime fan I will ignore ecchi as long as the show has other strong elements. Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma was dripping in ecchi but examined food in a serious, masterful way so the ecchi was just a minor distraction and boring filler to me. I find it interesting that most male fans seem to view ecchi as humdrum too, or at least the ones who bother to comment.

  7. If they keep making anime like these, then there must be an audience and a demand somewhere. I myself am particular about yaoi and I search for them like a moth to a flame. However, they’re not considered “mainstream” so I understand that they’re not for most of the anime fans. I agree with you that the line between porn and “softcore” ecchi is blurring right now. When non-watchers of anime see this kind of anime, I just KNOW that they’ll label all of us anime fans as perverts and that all anime are porn. Sigh. Well, not all of them…but there are some of them. Sigh.
